120th Evacuation  Hospital

May 17, 2001

Mr. Roger Cohen

The New York Times

New York, New York

Dear Mr. Cohen:

I read  your article “As Goethe’s City is honored, Buchenwald lurks nearby” which appeared  in the August 3rd edition of the Times.

I was especially impressed by your  full coverage of this painfully involved social issue for the German people.  As a trained German specialist  (Army Specialized Training Program) at Fordham  University in 1943, I was especially effected by the exposure to the “camp”, so called by our commanding officer, when I walked up the pathway from Schloss  Ettersburg to Buchenwald.  I have described the emotional impact  that had on me in the description I enclose, part of the attempt to recall some of the experiences I  had while working in Buchenwald in April,  l945.

I also enclose a description of a program that our unit, the 120th Evacuation Hospital, is planning, a return to Buchenwald in the year 2000.  We want to try to recapture some of the individual experiences we had while treating the thousands of  desperately sick prisoners.  I have enclosed  an article from Time Magazine which describes our efforts in 1945 in Buchenwald.

Thank you again for your story,  I would be pleased to  talk with you about our

“Buchenwald   Project”, its rationale, and the present status of our efforts. My e-mail address appears below, along with my telephone  and FAX number.
