To the best of my knowledge, there was no
newsletter after the
first reunion of the 120th Evacuation Hospital in
Kansas City since
we were not sure about the possibility of any
future reunions at that
time, Therefore , for the record, let me give a
brief resume` of that
reunion.
The first reunion of the 120th
Evacuation Hospital was held
in Kansas City, MO. September 23-25, 1994 at the
Westin Crown
Center Hotel.
This was 50 years after the origin of the unit. We
had 83
attendees, 48 of whom were original members of the unit.
On Friday, September 23rd, 1994 the
members began to arrive
and begin the registration process in our
hospitality suite. The afternoon and early evening were spent in getting
reacquainted, sharing a beverage or two and some snacks. That evening small
groups went
out to dinner on their own.
One Saturday we had a buffet breakfast from 7:30 AM to 9:00
AM, then at 9: 30 AM we assembled for a tour of the
Hallmark
Visitors Center (located right in the Crown Center),
where a tour was
conducted for the benefit of our group. A small
gift packet of
Hallmark items were given to each guest as the tour
was completed.
A touring trolly was available for all to visit nearby areas of
interest. For a fee of $3.00, seniors could use it
for as many boardings as needed for a full day. Many used this means of
transportation to visit the nearby Nelson Gallery, visit the art exhibits and
get lunch at their
cafeteria.
At 6:30 PM Saturday evening we had a
cocktail reception followed
by a banquet dinner. After dinner we had
professional entertainment
by a young male singer who was billed as
“Young Frank Sinatra”, who
sang many of those Sinatra favorites. This was followed by a brief
business meeting. The balance of the evening we listened to John
Schneider and others play the piano and sing, while
everybody took
the opportunity to meet and talk to as many of our
old friends as
possible.
One Sunday, the 25th, after a continental
breakfast, we left by
bus to the dock on the Missouri River, where we
boarded a stern-
wheeler cruise boat for a cruise down the Missouri
River. Brunch
was served, and we enjoyed some entertainment
(magic, etc)
provided by the cruise line.
We returned to the hotel in the late afternoon
and some prepared
to depart, while others remained for another
evening of fellowship
before
a Monday departure. I believe all
who attended were
enthusiastic about the reunion and agreed we should
look into the
idea of continuing this idea of reunions in the near future.
